As far as vegetable gardening is concerned, the more land you have for planting, the better. But if you don't have a big land space in your backyard or outside your home, you can still have a vegetable garden by having it indoors with the use of indoor containers.
If you want to start an indoor vegetable garden, there are three basic things to look into.
The first thing to consider is the type of vegetables to plant. Although the options of what vegetables to plant are limited, there are still plenty of vegetables you can plant in an indoor garden. Basically, these are the smaller vegetables such as bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots and cucumbers. For that matter, any vegetable that can be planted in a container without being restricted from growing well can be planted in an indoor vegetable garden.
When choosing the types of vegetables to plant in your indoor garden, it would be a good idea to go to your local garden center and ask for their advice. They are normally very willing to help and will offer you different varieties of plants. Be sure to ask them how to plant them because some vegetables require a different process of planting.
The second consideration is the type of container to use. Generally, containers with holes located in the bottom are the best types. This kind of container allows access water to be drained away. This is important because too much water could possibly destroy your vegetables by drowning the roots or enabling fungus to grow. Put the container on top of a deep dish that can collect the water and empty the dish occasionally.
In selecting a container for your indoor garden, attention to detail is essential. Choose a color that will compliment your home so as to make your garden blend with your living space. You can use decorative metal pails, clay pots and even plastic jugs. The containers you choose should also be dependent on the type of vegetables planted. Check the exact measurements so that you won't end up buying the wrong size. For tomatoes and bell papers, large containers are more appropriate. On the other hand, for string beans and carrots, you need long and narrow containers. Some other plants to consider for indoor container gardening are cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, short vine cucumbers and squash, spinach, Swiss chard, leaf lettuce, miniature cabbage, eggplant and green onions.
The final thing to look into would be the soil. Make sure to prepare it with enough nutrients for your plants. Do not bring in dirt from your outdoor space to use for your indoor vegetable garden. This is because they might contain unwanted elements like weeds, insect pests etc. A better idea would be to buy topsoil for indoor gardening. Check the temperature and moisture of the soil. Don't over-water the plants, just water moderately. Finally, place the containers where they can receive the required amount of sunlight always.
After a few weeks or months, you will have thriving vegetables just like the ones in outdoor gardens and you can have fresh vegetables all year long.
